Frequently Asked Questions
Is double chin liposuction a safe procedure?
In healthy patients and in the hands of an experienced facial plastic surgeon, neck liposuction is very safe. It can be done while awake under local anesthesia for numbing. Risks include bruising, swelling, contour irregularities or temporary numbness.
How long is the recovery period for liposuction?
Most patients experience mild swelling and bruising for a few days. A compression garment is worn under the chin for one to two weeks. Many return to work in several days and resume exercise in about two weeks.
Is surgery for double chin removal permanent?
Fat cells removed during neck liposuction do not typically grow back. If you maintain a stable weight, the improved contour lasts for many years. Aging of the skin and muscles will still occur over time. If you gain weight, this fat can accumulate again in the same area.
5 Reasons To Get Neck Liposuction
It defines the jawline, reduces the look of a double chin, improves neck profile in photos, can be combined with other facial surgeries, and offers a relatively quick recovery compared to larger procedures.
Will I have loose skin after my liposuction surgery?
Skin elasticity determines how well it retracts after fat removal. In younger patients or those with good skin quality, the skin tightens nicely. In others with more skin laxity, muscle banding or excess neck skin, a neck lift will give the best outcome.
How is liposuction performed?
Small incisions are made under the chin or behind the ears. A thin cannula is inserted to gently suction out excess fat. The incisions are closed with fine sutures and heal with minimal scarring.
What type of fat is removed during liposuction?
Liposuction removes subcutaneous fat—the layer of fat just under the skin. It does not remove deep fat under the muscle, or address the muscle and deeper structures of the neck.
