Traveling Patients: Plan Your Upper East Side Surgery Trip

Many patients travel to us for care. We make planning simple, from virtual consults to travel and private nursing resources. Here is a helpful guide to help you plan your trip.

Your Timeline at a Glance

1) Virtual Consult
We start with a video visit. Please send standardized photos before your call. You will receive an email with instructions. We review goals, candidacy, recovery, and travel windows during this call.

2) Secure a Date
Once cleared, we hold your surgery date with a deposit. We coordinate pre-op labs, prescriptions, and aftercare.

3) Travel and Recover
Arrive one to two days before surgery. Dr. Shikara likes to meet her patients in person at least one day prior to surgery. Plan to stay locally for 12-14 days for regular post-op care and suture removal visits with Dr. Shikara. We continue virtual check-ins after you return home. We like to see you again in person at least once at 4-6 weeks, and again at 3 months. Dr. Shikara is available to you for virtual phone calls and we will continue virtual check-ins every 3 months after that.

Private Duty Nursing

You will spend the first night with one of our experienced nurses who specializes in plastic surgery recovery. This ensures you have expert monitoring, medication assistance, and support during the most critical recovery period.

After the first night, you may choose to:

• Continue with a private duty nurse for additional days (even if you have a family member staying with you).

• Have a family member or trusted companion stay with you and care for you.

1. The Gardens Sonesta ES Suites : Approx. 0.4 miles, 8 to 10 minutes

Suite-style rooms, quiet residential feel, convenient for longer stays. Spacious accommodations preferred by our nurse. Personal full kitchen and freezer (useful to keep ice).

2. The Lowell : Approx. 0.3 miles, 6 to 8 minutes

Boutique luxury, discrete service, townhouse feel.

3. Loews Regency New York: Approx. 0.2 miles, 4 to 5 minutes

Classic Park Avenue hotel, reliable amenities.

4. The Carlyle, a Rosewood Hotel : Approx. 0.9 miles, 18 to 20 minutes

Elegant charm, luxury rooms and suites, serene ambiance.

5. The Mark: Approx. 1.0 mile, 20 to 22 minutes

Travel: Getting Here

Airports

• LGA: often the closest. 25 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic

• JFK: 45 to 75 minutes by car, allow extra time during rush hours

• EWR in Newark, NJ: 45 to 75 minutes by car.

  Transportation tips

• Use a Ride App car service like Uber or Lyft after surgery to minimize unnecessary walking.

• Request early check-in and elevators close to your room if possible.

• Pack zip or button-front tops, a neck pillow, and slip-on shoes for comfort. We will send you the full shopping list closer to your surgery.
